FAQs

It is natural to have some questions about therapy, especially if you have not been before. I aim to be as transparent as possible and I hope to answer as many of your questions below. If I have not answered your questions, then please contact me and I will be happy to help you.

What is Psychodynamic Therapy? Psychodynamic therapy looks at the root causes of why we feel and behave the way we do. Psychodynamic theory is based on the idea that our early experiences shape us and, by exploring them, we can start to understand more about ourselves and have a better command of our place in the world and relationships with others.

What is the format of sessions? Sessions take place at the same time weekly and last 50 minutes. By committing to therapy, you commit to this time slot every week until your therapy ends, with the exception of planned holidays and illness.

How long should I have therapy for? I offer open-ended therapy and you can finish therapy sessions at any time. The length of time you choose to have therapy depends very much on how beneficial you are finding it. Sometimes, therapy can feel like it’s a making a difference very quickly, sometimes the process is a little slower.

What can I expect from sessions? We will go at a pace that suits you, and I will always try to work in a way that feels comfortable for you. I believe in a warm and supportive environment but also think that it’s good to work at and challenge perspectives or feelings that may be holding you back in life. This means that sometimes therapy may involve facing up to things that are hard to think about, but it is good to stick with the process even if it sometimes feels difficult.

What is my cancellation policy? As long as you give 48 hours notice, you won’t be charged a cancellation fee. If you cancel within 24 hours, half a session’s fee may be payable.

How much does therapy cost? The initial 30 minute consultation is free of charge. After this, online sessions are £70 and face-to-face sessions are £80. Further details about pricing can be found here.

How do I pay for sessions? Please pay in advance of sessions by Bacs. You can pay for sessions one by one or in a block if preferable.

Do I have to be referred by a doctor to attend therapy? No, a doctor does not have to refer you to attend therapy. Visiting your GP and being referred through NHS services is one way to access therapy, but you can also select your own therapist and set up sessions privately.

Do you have evening and weekend appointments? I have limited evening slots available. Generally, I don’t offer weekend slots but my availability is subject to change and I will be as flexible as possible to try and fit you in.
